My husband Brandon and I are both carriers of the abnormal gene that causes SMA. Like many of you, we never heard of SMA before. When we found out we were both carriers, we were in shock. Like many of you we thought, " that could never happen to me." Well, it's very possible, 1 in every 40 people are carriers of SMA (that's 10 million Americans). We felt that day all of our dreams of having a family were shattered. Wanting so much to start a family, we learned of our options. One of those options is in-vitro fertilization. We recently embarked on the adventure of IVF and traveled all the way to NYC to start our family. We have had no success with IVF yet but will continue to fight for the family we are both longing for. Brandon and I have come to hate this cruel disease that is making our dreams of having a family not come true. Our goal is to spread awareness about this horrible disease, so that one day we can have a cure!
Come back and visit for updates on our journey with SMA
I think it is so wonderful that you and your husband are such amazing advocates for SMA awareness just being carriers of the disease. You are so inspirational and I read your blog post about your IVF struggles. It is so candid and so awesome for you to explain all that you have gone through. I believe it is important for everyone to understand the options of trying to get pregnant when carrying the SMA gene. I will be praying for a baby to bless your lives very soon!
